2010 LADY MARAUDERS

SEASON PREVIEW

The Varsity Softball team enjoyed a very successful season in 2009. They posted a 22-5 record, won the League Championship for the 23rd time in the last 27 years and were County finalists. It was their 19th consecutive 20 win season, a state record, and were ranked #1 in NY State for the majority of the year.

The Lady Marauders are very excited about the season. They return seven of nine starters with a number of quality players vying for the two openings. The squad is usually the team to beat and this year should be no exception. Always playing the best to be the best, Bay Shore will once again compete against the finest teams in NY State.

The girls will compete in five, four way “play days.” They include the best competition on Long Island and NY State. They are against perennial playoff, league, county and state champions. They include White Plains, Islip, Minisink Valley, Carey, Hauppauge, Plainedge, Kings Park, Deer Park, Riverhead, St. Francis and Newburgh Free Academy.

The Lady Marauders will travel to Binghamton, the “hot spot” of NY State softball, to compete against Chenango Valley, Binghamton, Maine – Endwell and Vestal. This two day competition features some of the premier programs in the state.

Only allowed one non-league game, they will play against two time NY State Catholic School Champions, St. John the Baptist. They also play Class AA State Champions Brentwood, who they lost to in the County finals.

With such a challenging season, the squad dedicated themselves to an ambitious off-season training program. They did weight training, plyo’s and speed work, in addition to diligently working on their softball skills. They know all their hard work will pay huge dividends.

Pitching is the name of the game and Bay Shore boasts two of the finest hurlers in NY State with senior Liz Weber and junior Taylor McGowan. Weber was All-County, and All-State in 2008 & 2009 as well as being a Newsday All-Long Island selection in 2008 and an N.F.C.A. Regional All-American. Liz was League II Pitcher of the Year in 2008 and is geared to have her finest year, in this her final season. Liz is perhaps our finest overall player as she is our #3 hitter, batted .341 with 16 RBI’s and 26 runs scored. Ms. Weber trains voraciously and can have a monster season.

Taylor McGowan is also a dominant pitcher. In 2009 she was League II Pitcher of the Year, was All-County & All-State. She was also selected Newsday All-Long Island and was an N.F.C.A. Regional All-American. The junior pitcher is 23-5 with a minuscule 0.72 E.R.A. She has averaged 9.3 K’s a game and has thrown 14 shut-outs in 28 games. Taylor is also an outstanding 2nd baseman with smooth hands. As a hitter, she led the team in RBI’s in 2008 with 35 and was 2nd in 2009 with 24. After hitting .437 in 2008 she hit .293 in 2009. She worked relentlessly on her offensive game this off- season and is expected to have a “bounce back” year in 2010.

Senior captain Kelsey Fischer is geared to have a terrific senior season. A fifth year player and a four year starter, Kelsey hopes to “put it all together” in 2010. A five-tool player, Kelsey is one of the most skilled players in the County. Kelsey has been an All-League and All-Conference performer and an N.F.C.A. Regional All-American. Kelsey had a monster year in 2008 hitting .514. Kelsey “slipped” to .306 in 2009. Ms. Fischer has the skill set to put up some major numbers this season. She remains perhaps the best defensive 3rd baseman in the County.

Senior Cat Franzone enters her 3rd and final season as a Lady Marauder. Franzone had a breakout season in 2009. As our #4 batter, she led our team in batting average .407, O.B. % of .510, slugging % of.593 and RBI’s with 25. Ms. Franzone has good instincts on the base path, tracks the ball well and has a fine arm. Cat has the ability to have a stellar senior season and add to her already formidable numbers. Cat earned All-League and was an N.F.C.A. Regional All-American.

Zuri Delfosse is a senior outfielder with a great attitude. Zuri has an infectious personality and is greatly respected by her teammates. Zuri has good speed and will be utilized as a pinch- runner and will compete for playing time in the outfield.

Three year player Amber Fogarty is possibly our most passionate and dedicated player. Amber has all the tools, is a tireless worker and loves the game. Although diminutive in stature, she is a very strong athlete with strong softball skills. By far our fastest runner, Amber does some serious damage when she’s on the base paths. When she puts the ball in play, she is a significant offensive threat. Amber can slap and will also bat righty. She has the fundamentals to be a good offensive player. As a short-stop, Fogarty has great range, smooth hands and a rifle arm. Amber plays with high energy and she should raise her game to another level.

Junior Nicole Marzillo comes off season ending surgery in 2009. Now fully healed, Nicole is primed for a fine 2010 campaign. Nicole is an exceedingly strong player and could be a “banger” in the middle of the line up. As a freshman she hit .333 with 20 RBI’s. Nicole has great extension on her swing and drives the ball to the alley’s. Ms. Marzillo is a terrific 1st baseman who “picks” well and has good feet around the bag. Nicole has surprising speed and will take an extra base as well as steal some.

Freshman phenom Courtney Syrett had an outstanding inaugural season. Courtney was League II Rookie of the Year as she hit .333 with 16 RBI’s, 18 runs and 8 stolen bases. Courtney started at 5 different positions as she is our most versatile athlete. A great athlete with a big upside Courtney could have a storied career in the program. Another five tool player, Courtney will find a home behind the “dish” this year. She is a very accomplished catcher already and her defensive prowess and great arm will keep opponents at bay. Ms. Syrett is an offensive weapon and her numbers should reflect that.

Briana Coan is a sophomore who batted .444 in limited duty. Briana has an uncommon work ethic, is a consummate team player and has improved her skills significantly. Ms. Coan has got some real “pop” in her bat, plays multiple positions and is extremely coachable. Brian has a real chance to break into the starting line up and add to an already potent line up.

Giana Panariello is another passionate player who is versatile, intelligent and intense. Giana is a slapper who has improved because of an off season filled with camps, clinics and practices to improve her game. Giana can play all positions other than pitcher and that ability will ensure her increased playing time in 2010.

Junior Marissa Brightman joins the “big girls” this season and her athleticism should enable her to compete for playing time. Marissa is a 3 sport athlete and plays outfield as well as catcher. Marissa runs well and brings a lot of energy to the team.

Erika Traina was the pitcher for the J.V’s past two seasons and it’s most important player. Erika throws in the mid to high 50’s and is the #1 pitcher on her 18U team. Erika swings a big bat and can add some punch to our line-up. She will compete for time on the mound and 1st base. Additionally, she could see time as a D.H. and pinch hitter.

Sophomore Angelica Horne moves up from the J.V. where she was the shortstop for the last two years. Another 3 sport athlete, Jelly will compete for time in the middle infield. Although raw, Jelly is a good athlete with good speed and a good attitude.

Stephanie Ellwood is another raw, but good athlete. A 3rd baseman, Stephanie should improve dramatically with increased repetitions and intense workouts. Stephanie is a great kid, with a good work ethic who seems never to get fazed.

Coach McGowan and Coach Pasquerella also have high hopes for this year’s squad. They are experienced, tenacious and will compete with every fiber of their being. The Lady Marauders will practice with purpose and play with passion. As always they have …High Expectations and High Standards!
