Bay Shore & Arlington Tie for Third @ NY
State Championships
The Bay Shore Girls Cross-Country team continues
to roll! Not expecting to even get to the States
earlier in the season, we upset Northport in
the Suffolk County Championships, and all of
a sudden, we are right in the mix. We would
place tied for third in the Class AA Championships
with Arlington High School, which has been ranked
in the top ten in NY State all season. Fayetteville-Manlius
won and are the defending National Champions,
and rated #1 in the United States again this
year! Saratoga was second, and they are ranked
#11 in the United States. Bay Shore is currently
ranked #11 out of all the teams in NY, and #5
NYS Class AA. With our strong performance at
the States, we have been invited to the NYS
Federation Championships this Saturday at Bowdoin
Park in Wappinger Falls, NY.
Kim Moran once again was Bay Shore and Suffolk
County’s top runner. Kim would move up
throughout the race, and was sixth with 800
meters to go. Kim would hold on to 11th place
with another pb time of 19:21.30. Stephanie
Barnes would place 38th with a time of 20:15.88.
Kathryn Glynn would place 46th with a time of
20:33.24. Lindsay Arcuri would place 64th with
a time of 20:53.55. Megan O’Donovan was
67th with a time of 20:58.34. Catherine Schmidt
was 96th running 22:25.96. Shannon Christie
would run 23:03.87 to place 101st. To get tied
for third was another big accomplishment for
this team. Only Kim Moran and Stephanie Barnes
had any experience running in a State Championship.
So we really felt that our runners did a great
job!!! We will hope to break into the top ten
this weekend, which could get us a ranking in
the top 50 in the United States!!!

Suffolk County Division Championships @ Sunken
Meadow (5000 meters)
Tuesday – October 21, 2008 (pt. cloudy,
windy, 62 degrees)
Kim Moran Wins Individual Title!!!
Coming off an excellent race at Brown, we needed
to really focus and come back tough on the hilly
Sunken Meadow course. Kim Moran set the tone,
moving to the front early in the race, and never
looked back. Kim was outstanding, winning the
race with a pb time of 19:22.8. This moves Kim
to #7 on the all-time list at Bay Shore, and
she is now among the elite runners ever! It
was a very exciting race, and Kim became only
the second runner in Bay Shore history (Laura
Cummings – 2004) to ever win the Individual
Division Championships. The best two teams in
every league in the county run in the Championship
Race. The best individuals can also run in this
race if they rank among the 50 fastest runners
in the county. Kim Moran beat them all!!! Stephanie
Barnes was also running the race of her life,
as she moved up very well over the later stages
of the race. Stephanie placed 5th with a pb
time of 19:56.1. Sophomore Kathryn Glynn continues
to run great, placing 9th with a time of 20:09.6.
Eighth grader Lindsay became the second fastest
eighth grader ever in Bay Shore (Laura Cummings
– 19:53.2 in 2000), with a pb time of
20:43.1. Lindsay placed 19th overall. Because
of injuries to key runners, we have been looking
for our #5 runner all season. Megan O’Donovan
has stepped into that spot, and runs better
every meet! She did the same again, running
a pb 21:19.3, placing 33rd. Her previous best
was 23:45.76! What a terrific job Megan has
done, and she is not done yet!!! Rounding out
our top seven were Shannon Christie, who ran
the best cross-country race of her life, with
a pb time of 21:51.7. Her previous best was
23:03.40! Catherine Schmidt ran very well, pushing
the pace throughout the race, but faded a little
over the last 800 meters. Her time was 22:15.7.
We did a terrific job! Team scores (Division

In the Individual Qualifier (JV) Race, the
Bay Shore girls placed a very competitive 4th.
With key runners such as Regina Peattie, Karina
Gonzalez, Ashley Moran, Danielle Glynn, Michelle
Traynor, Darleen Eiermann and Aasha Jackson
all out with various injuries, we went very
deep into the team to be competitive. The girls
not running would be better than ¾’s
of the varsity teams in Suffolk County! So to
place fourth was a very nice accomplishment!
Olivia Civardi, coming back from a foot injury,
placed 6th with a time of 22:23.77. Olivia needs
a week to get back into the swing of things.
Eighth grader Melinda Czaja has been very impressive.
Melinda placed 11th with a pb 22:38.76. Lindsey
Beakes, running in her last cross-country race
for Bay Shore, went out in style. Lindsey ran
a pb 23:51.05 to place 34th out of 276 runners.
Kathleen Kanaley has done a great job and is
also someone that has run better every race.
KK ran a pb 23:53.30 to place 36th. Vicki Tiedemann
continues her comeback from being sick. She
ran 23:58.62 placing 38th. Running pb’s
were Wendy Leiva 24:44.82, Jenn Chitiva 24:48.01,

Bay Shore Loses a Heartbreaker to Northport!!!
The meet against Northport was for the League
3 Championship, as it has been for the last
eight years. We usually go against them later
in the season, so we had to get ready a little
earlier than we normally had to. It was a meet
that lived up to its billing. It was close the
entire race. Kim Moran went right to the lead
and was never challenged. Kim’s winning
time was the fastest time by a Suffolk County
runner this year – 18:48. Northport took
the next two spots with Leanne Farber running
19:09, and eighth grader Sarah Zieve running
19:13. Stephanie Barnes ran a pb 19:24 placing
4th. Kathryn Glynn continued to impress with
another pb – 19:37 to place 5th. Northport’s
Sam D’Amato 19:54 and Kelly Abbate 19:55
would place 6th and 7th. Eighth grader Lindsay
Arcuri would run a pb – 20:01 to place
8th for Bay Shore. Normally Regina Peattie would
have already finished, but the All-County ninth
grader felt a sharp pain in her foot coming
down “Snake”, and we pulled her
from the race. Turns out she broke her foot
and is out for the season. That would be the
break Northport needed to win the meet! We will
really miss Regina, who is a terrific young
runner! Northport would take the next three
spots before Olivia Civardi, who ran a pb time
of 20:33, placing 12th. Tough to lose such a
close race, and lose one of our top runners
as well. Overall the team ran very well, and
we will have a chance to beat Northport in the
County Championships on Halloween!!! Karina
Gonzalez ran a pb – 21:16, as well as
Kathleen Kanaley – 22:56; Wendy Leiva
– 23:50; Gillian Swanson – 24:50;
and Maureen Aromi – 26:22. Catherine Schmidt
was sick, but still managed to run 21:25 placing
17th. Shannon Christie 21:29 and Megan O’Donovan
– 22:01 ran very well.
The New York State Rankings have Bay Shore
#11 overall, and #8 in the Class AA (Large Schools),

to run better on the hills, and will look to

ago, running 22:04.90 to place 8th. Rounding
out the top seven was eighth grader Lindsay
Arcuri, who ran 22:11.38 to place 10th. Terrific

September 23, 2008.

and Queensbury. Team scores: 1. Warwick 20;

Jim Smith Invitational @ Sunken Meadow State
Park
Saturday – September 13, 2008 (sunny,
warm, humid, 80 degrees)
Kim Moran Fastest Long Island
Runner at Jim Smith Invite!!!
The Jim Smith Invitational has
separate races for freshman, sophomores, juniors
and seniors. Instead of counting the top five
runners, they only count the top three. In the
freshman race, Regina Peattie place fourth with
a time of 8:55.73 for the 1.5 mile race. This
is one of the fastest 1.5 mile times in Bay
Shore history. Eighth grader Lindsay Arcuri
was seventh running 9:12.54. Another eighth
grader Melinda Czaja was twenty-third with a
time of 9:56.67. Genesis Miranda 12:29.98, Gabi
Bruno 14:12.7 and Allison Motschwiller 14:13.1
rounded out the freshman team that placed second
(twenty-five teams competed).
In the sophomore race, newcomer Kathryn Glynn
ran a terrific race (especially since this was
her first ever cross-country race), placing
fifth with a time of 21:36.37. Catherine Schmidt
placed fifteenth with a time of 22:51.77. Karina
Gonzalez was thirty-third with a time of 24:06.06.Kathaleen
Kanaley 25:34.27 and Jenn Chitiva 26:21.27 rounded
out our sophomore team. Gillian Swanson ran
one of the best races of her career! They place
third out of twenty-three teams.
In the junior race, we placed twenty-second
out of thirty teams. In fairness to the juniors,
we are not anywhere near full strength. Out
with injuries or illness include Danielle Glynn,
Vicki Tiedemann, Darleen Eiermann, and Shannon
Christie. They are our top four juniors! Top
junior was Megan O’Donovan. Megan ran
very well as a freshman and appears to be on
the road back; looking like her old self recently!
Megan ran 24:57.55 to place fifty-fifth out
of 157 runners. Daestiny Lalane ran 26:54.13,
and Maureen Aromi ran 29:26.81.
In the senior race, we would place a close second
to powerhouse Suffern, with twenty-three schools
competing. Kim Moran had the fastest time of
any Long Island runner, placing second running
20:20.72. Stephanie barens placed third running
20:55.78. Olivia Civardi placed thirteenth with
a time of 22:26.26. Lindsey Beakes ran 25:13.69,
with Courtney Kayser running 26:19.63.
It was a good season opener for us, but we have
work to do. If you combined all the classes,
and projecting what the freshman would have
run for the 5000 meter race, we could very well
have been the best team at the meet. We will
find out next weekend at the Bob Pratt Invitational
at Sunken Meadow.
