Bay Shore Girls Win
Second Straight at Eddy Games!!!
The 69th Annual Eddy Games were held =
at Union College
in Schenectady, New York. This is the oldest track mee=
t in New York State. They give out terrific awar=
ds,
and the competition is very good. This was an important meet for us, with t=
he County Championships
just a little more than a week away. The scoring after fourteen of the
seventeen events had Shenendehowa in first with=

points, Utica Proctor second with 53.5, and Bay Shor=
e
third with 48. I thought we had enough points to be in the lead, but was
surprised to see we were in third. Could we win? I knew we had Stephanie Ba=
rnes
in the triple jump, and we had a good 4 x 800 relay, and a very good 4 x 40=
0. I
knew that Proctor had big sprint points, but were not going to score enough
points in the last three events to win. Shen ha=
d a
very strong 4 x 800, and would probably win that event, but did not have a =
4 x
400 team entered. We had to finish no worse than second in the 4 x 800 to h=
ave
a chance to win the team title. Kathryn Glynn ran very tough, having just r=
un
the 1500 meter run less than a half hour before. She handed off fourth.
Freshman Regina Peattie would run a four second=
pb (2:24.3) to bring us in=
to
second place. Kim Moran would hand off third and we had a shot at catching
Northport for second. Olivia Civardi, also havi=
ng run
the 1500, would run very well to move us into second, with Shen
winning. The score was now Shen 73, Bay
Shore 56, Proctor 53.5. Stephanie B=
arnes
jumped 38’2” on her last jump, after fouling twice. Steph was sitting in second, which would give us eight
points. The finals of the triple jump were going on during the last event of
the meet, the 4 x 400. If Stephanie stayed second in the triple, we would h=
ave
64 points, and would have to win the 4 x 400 to beat S=
hen
by a point. This brought back memories of last years meet, where we edged o=
ut
the Academy of Holy Name 77-76.5. Could we do it =
again!
Stephanie passed on her three jumps in the triple jump final, to try and he=
lp
the team win the meet. Tough to give up a chance to win your favorite event=
to
help your team win. That is what makes Stephanie
Barnes such a special young lady! Stephanie Barnes would run the opening le=
g on
our 4 x 400 relay, and gave us the lead running 60.1(into a 20-30 mph wind).
Darleen Eiermann would run 60.0 to open up a 25=
meter
lead. Sophomore Aasha Jackson, running in one o=
f the
biggest races of her career, ran 61.6. Freshman anchor Danielle Rowe would =
run
60.9 to give us the win in 4:02.98, our fastest time of the season! It also
gave us the ten points we needed for the team title! This was a very exciti=
ng
win for us, and gave us four invitation wins this season. We won the Lindy
Relays, the Smithtown Invite, St. Anthony’s (the biggest meet on Long Island), and now the Eddy Games. To add to her
accomplishments, Stephanie Barnes would break Harriett=
e
Gardner’s school record in the long jump, with a winning jump of
18’7”. The old record of 18’3½” was set in 1=
995.
Senior Cherrice Brown would win the discus brea=
king
her own school record with a toss of 140’4”, which equals the t=
op
throw in New York
State this season! =
Cherrice would also place second in the shot put, wit=
h a
toss of 38’¼”.Danielle Rowe would place third in the 800=
meter
run, with a time of 2:17.52 (a very good time into the wind). Olivia Civardi went out very fast through the first 800 mete=
rs,
and held on for a fifth place finish in the 1500 meter run, with a time of
4:52.70. Brittany Siliupo would place fifth in =
the
100 meter hurdles with a time of 17.11 (run straight into a headwind). Darl=
een Eiermann was fourth in the 400 meter hurdles, running
67.33. The 4 x 100 meter relay of Josephine Anderson, =
Audreina
Blanding, Alexis Barrau, and Brittany Silipo ran 52.03 to place third. We will look to win =
the Freshman and the Sophomore Championships this Tuesday =
at
Longwood. Then we have the Suffolk County Championships on Tuesday May 26th
and Thursday May 28th at Comsewogue High
School.
